Hey! As promised, you can get my ceramics experiments for cash money. These cups are fun and take a long time to make. Here’s a little bit about how. First, I am using a type of porcelain that is very thixotropic, which is to say, it’s sort of like ketchup, an analogy I’ve used before: solid in the bottle but still pourable in some circumstances. The porcelain is impossibly sticky and challenging to work with, but the results can be remarkable: all these pots are translucent if you stick a lightbulb under them. I feel like I should be making light fixtures or something with this clay; it’s a kind of science magic. Even with multiple layers of glaze, you still get the translucency. Pretty cool. But definitely a learning curve. They take a long time to make because I keep destroying pots as I learn to make them better, particularly the ones that are carved or with a tall foot. I recycle any cup that doesn’t meet my standard. Each one is hand thrown, trimmed, and glazed in a multi-step, many-hours process. They have throwing marks on them—indications that the piece was hand made. Everything is foodsafe. Most of them have been single fired to cone 5. A few went back into the kiln for a second or third round, particularly the ones I carved, with layered glazes.
I am selling these for less than what it takes me to make them because I am in the early stages of standardizing my process with this new clay body. These are my one-offs (not seconds) and you should take one home because they are taking over the apartment at this point. Shipping is free in the continental US/lower 48.
